Metros

There are over 50 cities in China have metro systems, they are often well-maintained and easy to access.

Ticket

You can use the Alipay transport QR code for almost all metro and bus systems in China. Set up Alipay before you travel.

Buying tickets at the station is simple. Ticket machines and counters accept digital payments and cash. Some cities offer tourist passes, which you can buy at the ticket counter.

Notes: At least one ticket machine will accept cash. Ask the staff if you need help.

Security Check

Security checks are required at all metro stations. They are less strict than airport checks and mainly look for sharp objects or flammable items. Just scan your bags.

If carrying a small bag, locals often open it to show the inside to staff.

Other Tips

  • Metro tickets are very cheap unless you’re traveling to or from the airport. Use the metro when possible.
  • Metro lines are all numbered, like Line 2 or Line 14, and each line has its own color.
  • Stations and trains have English announcements.
  • Restrooms may not have toilet paper, so bring your own. Not all stations have restrooms.
  • Eating is usually not allowed on trains.
  • Animals are not allowed, except for guide dogs and police dogs.
  • Try to avoid peak hours, especially in Shanghai and Beijing, as trains can get so crowded that there’s no room to stand.
